Who is Joseph Smith? What does the LDS Church say about him?
On the official LDS website it says:
When Joseph Smith was 14 years old, he wanted to know which church he should join, so he asked God in sincere prayer. In response to this prayer, God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to Joseph and told him the true Church of Jesus Christ was not on the earth and They had chosen Joseph to restore it.
Mormons do not believe in the trinity or Godhead three-in-one. Which will be dealt with at a later stage. For now lets focus on where it says that Jesus and God the Father supposedly saying that the true Church of Jesus Christ was not on the earth anymore.
In Matthew 16:18 it says: “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.“
Jesus said that hell itself could not prevail against the church which He has built. This means that nothing could destroy the church that was built by Jesus, not any force in hell could stand against it. So which one is it, was Jesus lying or is Joseph lying?
Below are the words Joseph used to describe his vision:
When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in
the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other— “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
One of them . . . said, pointing to the other— “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects
was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those
professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When
I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home.
One of the major problems with this vision is that Joseph never tested the spirit. He doesn’t say anything about asking them who their god is, he just assumes that they are who they say they are.
2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
John specifically warns us to be vigilant and to test every single spirit before we accept anything they have to say. John says that there are spirits that come which are the antichrist and that they were already in the world. How did Joseph know this was not the spirit of the antichrist if he never tested the spirit in the way that we are told to do so?
Can you see how many people can be deceived simply because one man did not test the spirit that appeared to him?
1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good
The Bible is the measure by which we are to test all things. Only after we have confirmed that which we have heard with what the bible says, may we accept it.
I urge you to test anything that you are taught with what the Bible says. Do not accept something because you simply feel good about it. The word of God tells us that the heart is deceitful above all else and that you should not lean on your own understanding. It also says that His people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge. Do not be one of those people.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
